Shane Black To Pen Doc Savage Script
Clark Savage Jr. is certainly a jack-of-all-trades. He’s a surgeon, scientist, adventurer, inventor, explorer and as close to a superhero as you can get. Soon Clark, widely known as Doc Savage, will add another trade to his resume: big screen action hero.
As reported by AICN, while at a party, Shane Black revealed that he’s working on a Doc Savage script and may even direct the film. On top of that, he named Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci as the film’s producers. That would mean the Lethal Weapon scribe is working with the producers of Star Trek and Transformers to bring a popular pulp mag character to life. Whether or not you know who Doc Savage is, that’s pretty big.
Before getting ahead of myself, I did a little research – a quick Google search – and came across an article on Collider refuting the news that Orci and Kurtzman are attached to Doc Savage. According to Collider, the producers will be Neil Moritz and Ori Marmur, the guys responsible for upcoming films The Green Hornet and Battle: Los Angeles. The source is never cited, but I’d imagine that the author has a contact on the project.
The Collider article does confirm AICN’s report that the film will feature the titular character in the 1930s, the time at which Savage made his first appearance. He was created by Henry Ralston and John Nanovic, but it was Lester Dent that made the character an icon. Dent is responsible for writing 181 novels about the super-strong and extremely bright man fighting evil with the help of his Fabulous Five. According to both sources, the story will be a completely original idea and include the Fabulous Five.
