Sherlock Holmes And Avatar In A Heated Battle To Win Christmas
It’s going to be a fight to the finish for Avatar and Sherlock Holmes. The Friday estimates are in and Box Office Mojo has Robert Downey Jr. just edging out James Cameron’s Na’vi. Sherlock Holmes celebrates its opening day with $24.8 million while a $23.5 million day boosted Avatar’s to just over $160 million.
This puts both movies on track to break the $70 million mark for the weekend. Who’s going to come out on top? I’m putting my money on Avatar to come from behind. It’s playing in 170 fewer theaters, but the pricier tickets could be the clincher. Either way, this is almost certain to be the biggest Christmas in box office history! Trailing the top two heavyweights are Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel with $14.5 million, It’s Complicated with $7 million and Up In The Air with $3.5 million. It only takes some simple math to figure out we’re about to smash not only Christmas weekend totals, but all time totals too. Adding up just the top five films will put us well over $220 million for the weekend. The all-time record goes to the $260.8 million weekend in July 2008 that saw the debut of The Dark Knight. Regardless of who takes the top spot, both Avatar and Sherlock Holmes could break $70 million, which is a wildly impressive feat. Tack on decent showings by the rest of the lot and you’ve got a weekend for the history books. |
