ShoWest: Early Looks At Alice, Tron And Christmas Carol

ShoWest: Early Looks At Alice, Tron And Christmas Carol Several of the projects Disney wants us all excited about don't have any footage ready to be shown to the general public, even though one of them, A Christmas Carol, is scheduled to come out in theaters in about 7 months. But Disney has that way about them that they can get audiences excited about even concept art, which is basically what we saw from Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, a Christmas Carol and Tron today.

First up was Christmas Carol, which was a little featurette showing Robert Zemeckis talking about how groundbreaking his movie will be. Hilariously, the narrator referred to him as "visionary director Robert Zemeckis," which was a title I thought we'd all agreed to ignore after the Watchmen posters got annoying. But the concept art really was pretty fascinating, giving really quick glimpses of Jim Carrey as Ebenezer Scrooge and all three of the ghosts, including the little baby Ghost of Christmas Past who looks kind of like Jim Carrey with big blue eyes-- but is also shaped like a candle. Yeah, it's weird, but it works.

It's the set decoration that seems the most exciting, oddly enough, as the high technology of the motion capture doesn't seem to be getting in the way of the quaint Victorian setting. Not that snowflakes are what's going to get people in to see this, but Dickens purists might not be disoriented by all this new technology being thrown at them.

The Alice in Wonderland stuff was even more sparse than Christmas Carol, showing just a few images of some of the actors in costume, most notably Anne Hathaway as the White Queen. She looks fantastic, in pale white makeup with pink around the eyes, and a long white wig making her look kinda like a ghost, but kinda like the most beautiful girl in the world. Helena Bonham Carter as the Queen of Hearts was teased with just a pair of ornate boots, while Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter was seen with his face tilted away under his hat, and a tuft of fuzzy orange hair sticking out at the sides. No, I'm not sure either how they'll keep him from looking too much like Bozo the clown.

And as for the Tron stuff-- the official title, for the moment seems to be just Tron-- it seems to be essentially what we saw at Comic Con, with effects more completed. I was seeing it myself for the first time, and was pretty damn wowed by it, especially since it was in 3D. The computer world still seems a little old-fashioned by today's standards, but the motorcycle chase in this scene is thrilling in its own right. And Jeff Bridges makes a great villain. But we all knew that already.
