Shrek Does Broadway

discussioncomments published: 2004-10-17 00:00:00 Author: Bill Beyrer
Worlds are coming together as Dreamworks Animation, Academy Award winning director Sam Mendes (American Beauty), and Tony Award winning director Jason Moore (Avenue Q) are all teaming up to bring the successful Shrek to Broadway.

Shrek: The Musical will be directed by Moore who’s previous endeavor - the puppet powered hit Avenue Q - won him a Tony award earlier this year. There is no immediate word on plot for the singing green ogre, but from what’s being speculated it will blend elements of both Shrek and Shrek 2 while expanding the Shrek universe.

Mendes, who’s roots are in theatre, will produce the show alongside the Broadway virgins at Dreamworks. Animated movies adapted to the stage aren’t a new thing. Disney has adapted Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, both of which have been running succesfully for numerous years. Dreamworks throwing their hats in the mix is just another knee to the Disney crotch, a kneeing that started way back with the opening of the film Antz!.

The curtain goes up on Shrek: The Musical in 2006.
