Ridley Scott’s twisted Robin Hood tale Nottingham has found its Maid Marian. Various sources are reporting that Sienna Miller told the BBC this morning that she has the part.
Nottingham is the classic Robin Hood tale retold from the perspective of the Sheriff of Nottingham. Except in this version, the Sheriff is the good guy (played by Russell Crowe) struggling against a bad public image to do the right thing, while Robin Hood is an asshole who gets credit for being something he is not. Where exactly Maid Marian then fits into this new equation is uncertain. Helpless maid kidnapped by a jerk Robin? Or a besotted wench who falls for a bad boy while the good guy Sheriff pines away in unrequited love?
How ever it works out, I love the idea of Miller as Marian. She’s always had a vaguely dark ages, lady in waiting look about her. She’s a perfect fit for this world. In fact, she’s done fantasy before. She played a pivotal role in the unfairly overlooked 2007 fantasy movie Stardust.
Ridley Scott has made a great choice for his Marian, and Crowe is of course perfect as the Sheriff. All that's left is the casting of his Robin Hood, who has yet to be announced.
