Singer And Routh Abandon Superman

By Josh Tyler: 2008-01-04 03:41:37
Singer And Routh Abandon Superman Bryan Singer needs to take a cue from Sam Raimi and develop more follow-through. Sure, Spider-Man 3 wasn’t quite as good as the first two, but at least Raimi stepped up to the plate and did it, rather than torpedoing the franchise and turning it over to some hack director so he could run off and do a vanity project.

Singer on the other hand has already had a part in ruining one superhero franchise. With the end of the amazing X2 he left fans with a promise about the next film in the franchise. A promise he didn’t fulfill, as he ran off to do something else while Brett Ratner took a gigantic dump all over the X-Men with X3. Well now Singer is doing it to Superman.

There’ve been rumblings for awhile now that Singer might not return to direct a sequel to Superman Returns, even though the movie made more than enough money to warrant it, even though it was a critical smash, and even though Warner Brothers really wants another one. Now it seems all but certain Singer is ditching Superman. Variety columnist Anne Thompson says it’s “highly unlikely” that Singer will be back.

Worse, it sounds like Singer’s departure may mean the end of Brandon Routh’s reign as Superman. Say what you want about Superman Returns, but there’s no denying Brandon Routh was absolutely perfect as the big blue boyscout. The kid was incredible, there’s no way they’ll ever find anyone better. Unfortunately they’re going to have to try, because Latino Review says Routh is out as well. He won’t be back as Superman. Forget it. He’s done.

Instead, we’re all going to have to sit through that awful JLA movie. By the way, in case you’re wondering why the cast was never announced, it’s because, as we were the first to report here, the film is being delayed till after the strike. So the next time you’ll see Superman on screen, it’ll be years from now, he’ll be played by some fill-in in JLA, and then after that… who knows. If Superman ever returns again, it’ll be without any of the people who made his return so great in the first place.

And now I’m utterly depressed. If only Singer wasn't so goddamned good! If Brett Ratner ends up directing the next Superman... Bryan Singer, sleep with one eye open.

THANK YOU!!! I agree that Singer and Routh are needed to bring Superman back to the masses. Sorry Smallville and Tom Welling, you just don't cut it.

I've had some ideas on how to make the sequel rock and really bring the series back into action and drama. I've been steadily working on a script that, in my opinion, only Singer, Spielberg, or another good director that is not McG or Rattner can pull off.

If I could only send it to Warner.

  1. Aaron Says:

I hope you understand that this is just a rumor. Anne Thompson is only stating her opinion; Due to Singer being so busy with other movies that have a script. The only thing that is holding up Superman is the strike. Singer and Routh have both said a number of times that they will be back. Routh stated that he is looking forward to the next Superman; Man of Steel. WB has also stated that they have no plans of changing anything with the actors or director. Routh and all of the other actors are signed on to do two more films so even with or without Singer, Routh will still be Superman. Anne Thompson is only stating what everyone was talking about before the strike started. And we all know that was nothing more than rumors that later turned out to be false. As for "Latino Review" well consider the source. I'll need a better one before i will start to believe what they are saying.

Much as I hope they're wrong, I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss Latino Review. They are usually fairly reliable Aaron.

  1. Alan Says:

Have the fan's wishes come true? Singer gone? Wooden Routh gone? Hip Hip Hooray! A terrible film can now be erased from continuity. No super kid, no lifting kryptonite islands, no buffoonish Luthor, no fright wig Lois, no limp sad sack Superman. Down the memory hole it goes. Today is a good day for Superman fans everywhere.

  1. Errol Says:

It was already confirmed last month that Tom Welling will be Superman in the JLA movie and then it was to expand to the latter Superman movie.

And when they ever do the Superman Movie Please NO to LEX LUTHER! YES to LOBO & BIZARRO(he is the Superman version of VENOM to Spiderman). Thank you.

  1. Rich Says:

Singer's not so great. Sure, X-2 was decent, but Superman Returns was utterly dreadful. The story dragged, the action was lame, and the overall epicness of it all was made too small to warrant anything watchable.

Hopefully, a second one will NEVER be made.

    Errol:

The creators of Smallville and Tom Welling himself have stated many times that was a rumor. Also they are looking for a young actor to play the role of Superman in JLA.

  1. Michelle Says:

Let's hope so! I can't believe ANYONE thought this movie was even a decent attempt at honoring Superman. Brandon Routh only looked (sorta kinda) like a Supes stand-in, but more like a dude dressing up for Halloween. Face it. They searched and searched, and well, that was the best they could come up with. Not BR's fault! And the script, Oh Lordy. I'm a mega geek, and I'll watch any kind of hero movie, but I was bored out of my mind. KS as Lex was the only good part. Superman has been my favorite since I was 4-years-old---VERY FAVORITE---so let's just say I was pretty crabby walking out of that movie. Please, someone, Save Superman!
