So I've been a little harsh on the romantic comedy Leap Year in the past, saying it's the usual silly romantic comedy plot that will put Amy Adams, yet again, into a cutesy cutesy role. But I'm feeling a bit more generous now that Simon Beaufoy has signed on to write the screenplay. He's the Oscar-nominated screenplay of Slumdog Millionaire, after all, and made the cutesy cutesy coincidences of that movie work beautifully.
The Hollywood Reporter doesn't say anything about when the project is likely to get started, but I imagine Beaufoy is a pretty hot property at the moment, and might need some time to get the screenplay going. This makes the second time he's written for Adams, having written the screenplay for last year's Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. That movie, for all its flaws, was as charming and delightful as Adams herself. We've got no reason to expect any less from Leap Year, even if the concept remains a bit silly.
