Well, I’m now set up to hate the new Star Trek movie. I’ve tried to be open minded about things as J.J. Abrams has re-engineered a time-honored franchise. I can take bringing a new cast in to play younger versions of the characters we’ve loved for years. I can handle yet another time-travel story for Trek, this time from the guy who’s captivated audiences for years with the antics of Lost. What I can’t take, however, is that Abrams is bringing in CG for the beasties young Kirk will face off with.
What happened to the good old days of men in rubber suits and Styrofoam rocks? Instead of going with what worked for Trek for years, Abrams is bringing in Neville Page, the guy who handled the Cloverfield monster (also for Abrams). I mean, is Trek really Trek if it features believable monsters?
You can check out an advanced peek at Neville’s creation over at Wired Magazine online, where they have seven images looking at different elements of the multi-eyed creature that will torment Kirk and company in a snowy environment. He also talks about his philosophy when it comes to creature making, which is pretty smart. He knows less has to be more sometimes in order to tease the audience. Hell, it worked for Cloverfield.
Alright, maybe I can accept Kirk squaring off with a CG creation. Can we at least get one shot of the youth holding a fake looking rock though, for old times sake?
