Sony Pictures Classics Picks Up Mother And Child

By Perri Nemiroff: 2009-11-02 17:02:47
Sony Pictures Classics Picks Up Mother And Child Annette Bening, Naomi Watts, Samuel L. Jackson, Kerry Washington and Sony Pictures Classics are one big happy family. Well, not literally and they’re not even particularly happy. SPC just nabbed domestic distribution rights to Rodrigo Garcia’s Mother and Child, a drama about some of the less rosy sides of motherhood.

The film takes a look at the relationship between mothers and their children through three parallel stories. Bening’s character suffers with the recent loss of her mother in addition to the recurrence of guilt over giving her child up for adoption. Watt’s character is without motherhood entirely, never having known her own mother and completely engrossing herself in her work as a lawyer. In Washington’s character’s case, she’s desperate to become a mother but is deemed infertile.

Mother and Child premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September and was received quite well. It marks the first film financed by Lisa Maria Falcone’s Everest Entertainment. Why should you care? Because the plan is to donate a portion of the profits to charities supporting women and children. The impressive cast and positive initial reception is great, but when Mother and Child hits theaters, I’ll be going for the fact that my $12.50 will be doing something meaningful.
