Soul Men: Moving On Without Isaac Hayes And Bernie Mac

By Josh Tyler: 2008-08-10 23:02:30
Soul Men: Moving On Without Isaac Hayes And Bernie Mac It’s been a depressing weekend for great black artists. In the span of 48 hours the entertainment industry has lost a legendary music icon in the form of Isaac Hayes, and a still rising, yet already legendary star in comedian Bernie Mac. It’s bad news for one movie in particular, a soon to be released film called Soul Men.

In one weekend, a significant portion of the movie’s primary cast has been wiped out. The film stars Samuel L. Jackson, Bernie Mac, and yes, the recently late, great Isaac Hayes in the story of two estranged soul legends (played by Jackson and Mac) who reunite at the Apollo Theater to honor their recently deceased band leader. Principle photography was already finished, so there should be no problem with getting it ready for release, but you have to wonder now whether or not Dimension Films will want to release it.

Death is a big subject in the film. The entire plot of the movie revolves around Mac and Jackson eulogizing the death of their friend with music, only now two members of the film’s actual cast really are dead. Three days ago it sounded like a fantastic idea for a film, especially in light of the way Sam Jackson belted out blues tunes in Black Snake Moan. Now, it seems almost too sad to watch. Buying a ticket to Soul Men could end up feeling like you’re purchasing a seat at someone’s funeral.

The movie doesn’t open until November 14th, so that does give the world a little time to grieve for its tragically departed stars. Still, don’t be surprised if Dimension Films decides to delay it a little more, maybe even until next year. November 14th may be too soon, particularly in light of the subject matter. Granted, after Heath Ledger’s death Warner Brothers found it prudent to let their film continue onward as planned after the death of its star, Heath Ledger. But The Dark Knight, for all it’s subtlety and complexity, was a summer superhero movie, and a hotly anticipated one, which only became more high profile after Ledger’s demise. Soul Men is something else entirely, a smaller movie, one that seems to be at least in part, specifically about grieving and death. Dimension studios may be left with no choice but to alter their plans for Soul Men, though we’re almost certain to see the film eventually.

Expect some official word from Dimension later this week, as they return to work on Monday and try to figure this depressing thing out. If there's a silver lining in this anywhere for them, it's that they cast Sam Jackson and not Morgan Freeman.

  1. Marilyn A. Marshall Says:

Yes, this news was very shocking over the weekend! I tend to disagree with the thoughts of not putting the MOVIE out. My Opinion is, that they were two multi-talented artists. I would more than likely want to see this film and see their work rather than THEM to be forgotten and getting dust of the film as if they did not exist!!!!

  1. Queen Meador Says:

I will agree with Marilyn in Houston... you guys need to release this file so we can remember both Isaac and Bernie Mac, just the way they were. We are planning a big movie party... just like Sex and The City... once the official release date has been decided. We are going to show both Isaac Hays and Bernie Mac that even though they have moved on... they are so LOVED and NOT forgotten!

  1. Patricia (Pennsylvania) Says:

The movie should be released. It serves as an opportunity for the millions of Isaac Hayes and Bernie Mac fans to see them doing what they enjoyed - entertaining others. That's the way we want to remember them, so I hope the movie releases as planned.

  1. Sheila G Says:

R.I. P. Bernie and Isaac, YOU will be so missed, as tears fall and my heart is saddened, but please don't stop putting out their recent movie " Soul Men"it is needed at this time, to strengthen their spirits and strengthen others hearts and souls! ( My opinion) It won't be easy but as in life, death is necessary for us to live our best life! Their electric spark will never go out permanently in the dark! YOU will be missed for sure ~ and I plan to collect a few more movies from both of you. R.I.P. Two GREAT Souls~! Thank you for touching US strongly! Warmest Blessings to BOTH families and friends of TWO Great Powerful man, that touched many! Stay Positive!

  1. E FIELDS Says:

I MUST AGREE PUTTING THE MOVIE ON HOLD IS A BIG MISTAKE. WHY WOULD YOU WANT TO STOP SOMETHING THEY LOVED TO DO. SHOULD WE NOT MENTION THEIR MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS.THE WORLD NEED TO SEE WE LOST 2 TALANTED BLACK MEN. MY HEART GOES OUT TO THE FAMILY.

  1. shikiboo Says:

I agree, the show must go on. I loved Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes, do not close the curtains and let them be forgotten. They live on in their movies and videos. I hope they do release this. They are gone but never forgotten. Rest in Peace

  1. Lucy from Hoeno Says:

I see no reason why the movie should be put on hold. It'll be a few months from now anyway and I can't think of a better tribute to the guys than to have their movie come out without a hitch.

  1. Kris Says:

This is really shocking and ill speak about both Mac and Hayes here. Isaac was a legened in his own right, and found a new audience in South Park. Mac was coming into his own, maybe a bit older but he had n audience and was growing quickly, I wished had had gotten to stick around to show us what he was amde of.
They'll both be missed and I wish thier families all the best.

  1. snout Says:

totally naive to think that the investors on this movie would be willing to lose millions of dollars & NOT release the film just because one or more stars had died. puh-leeze.

  1. Hey Says:

You people are seriously retarded if you think they won't release this movie. Did you happen to hear of a movie called "The Dark Knight"? Heath Ledger's death pushed that movie over the top and then some. I hate to say it, but think about what two dead people will do for sales! At least their families can reap the financial rewards.

  1. GrooveDog Says:

I agree with everyone else, RELEASE THIS MOVIE!! If they could speak to us now, Mr. Hayes & Mr. Mac would not want it held back, so why not release it like they would wish??

  1. MRGW Says:

I was born in Memphis 1969 and raised in Chicago. Losing both of these talented brothers, was like losing a family member. All condolences & prayers go out to both of their families. As for the release of "Soul Men", I would really like to see their final performance together and be able to add it to my DVD collection. They have always given us 100% of themselves through comedy, music, and acting; so I know the movie will do well at the boxoffice. THEY WILL BE TRULY MISSED!!!

  1. k williams Says:

Bernie and Isaac you will be greatly missed.....please do not stop the production of the movie so that we can remember that they are gone and not forgotten and we must remember as much as it might hurt us death is a celebration for everlasting life so we know they are in heaven right now looking down at us and their families.

  1. debbie Says:

eveyone has said it please release the film i luved both people i would truly love to see their last film dont take that from us to both familys my heart goes out to u but we loved them too and i hope in time it can get easyer for u luv u all and thank u

  1. be\\\'ja Says:

Both will be missed/And GOD Bless thier Families

  1. Jasmine Harrison Says:

I agree with most. I don't believe delaying the release of the movie is needed.

  1. Shelia Johnson Says:

I agree with all emails sent to honor and proclaim that this movie must be shown, and not held back. I think this is want Bernie "Mac" and Isaac Hayes would want. We will all still be grieving over the loss of such talented and wonderful actors. Let's keep the memories going, I can't wait to see the movie, and hopes that nothing being alter in the movie, "the original one". They truly will be missed!

  1. Frankie Says:

You guys are kidding me - Put the movie off??? With the kind of love that these two dudes have out there is the best thing to do! Dimension should not pretend that their untimely passing would be timely in the box office. Although out of respect, I think they should get the ok from their families and consider donating a percentage of the movie 'profits' (which they didn't anticipate) to some foundation in their name. The Mack & Hayes Soul Foundation - Bringing People together through laughter and soul!

  1. Roni Says:

They should release it. People work and when they die, we should be able to see their last creativity. I've seen some clips from this movie and it looks like it's going to be funny and good.
When Luther Vandross had his stroke, for the first time in his life, his cd went to #1.
I just wish the MSM had said more about these guys. I saw a little more in print about Bernie than I did Isaace Hayes. I guess if Bernie and Isaac had been drug addicts found with drugs like Heath and Anna Nicole, they would've gotten 24/7 coverage.

  1. Marcia Wimberly in Gainesville, FL Says:

Please allow the film to debut as planned. There has been such a blessing in having the Levert CD - likewise, I sooo look forward to this film; which will leave a much better feeling for so many as opposed to the picture we have now.

  1. Joe Says:

Release this movie, in fact release it sooner than you had planned! You absolutely have to realize that everyone wants to see it, now more than ever!!
