Forget Jonah Hill. Who cares which overweight, mildly amusing actor Michael Bay chooses to play Shia LaBeouf’s sidekick? I want to know about the robots, and the guys over at IGN have obliged by scoring an awesome scoop.
If you’re the kind of massive Transformers nerd I am, then the thing you missed most about Transformers was named Soundwave. Soundwave was the Decepticon tape player, who ejected tapes which also turned into miniature robots. Soundwave also has a little bit of what you might call a speech impediment, but that’s all part of his cool. Soundwave didn’t make it into the last Transformers movie, probably because of the difficulty involved with the nature of his transformation. Soundwave doesn’t just transform from a boombox into a robot, he transforms from a 1 foot high tape deck into a 20 foot tall robot. The physics of that are kind of a problem, if you’re making a live action film.
But, IGN talked to Transformers 2 screenwriter Robert Orci, who tells them Soundwave will make it into the sequel. In fact, he says they had Soundwave and one of his tape robot buddies Ravage in an early script for the original movie. What Orci doesn’t say is how they’ll solve the Soundwave size problem. As long as he still has that signature speech weirdness for me to run around imitating with my friends, I’ll be happy with however they work it out. Tyler eject.
