Richard Kelly has delivered on his promise, early. After a lot of delays, many were starting to wonder if his followup to Donnie Darko, Southland Tales, would ever get released. Kelly however, recently promised the movie would get a release date at Comic Con. Comic Con starts Thursday, Southland Tales got an official release date in Variety today.

Samuel Goldwyn Films has picked up Kelly’s Southland Tales and will release it in theaters on November 9th with a little help from Destination Films and Sony. So great, it’s hitting theaters. No word on if that’s a wide release or just a token limited release into a few arthouses where most people will never have a chance to see it. Kelly’s last movie got a wide release and turned into a theatrical flop. Actually, I think I may have been the only person on the planet to actually see Donnie Darko in theaters. Sure, the movie became a cult hit on DVD, but initially it was a disaster. After all the negative buzz on Southland Tales, starting small might be warranted.

Now maybe someone can tell us what it’s about or who is even in it. There’s a long cast list attached to it, but many of the big stars in it, Mandy Moore for instance, aren’t even sure if they made it into the movie’s final cut. In theory the movie stars The Rock, Seann William Scott, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Mandy Moore set in a very near future (even nearer after the movie’s numerous delays) in which the world is on the verge of a social, economic, and environmental collapse. Various characters find their lives intertwined in uncovering some sort of vast conspiracy… we think.
