Once the casting was done and the sex-change operation news for Larry/Lana Wachowski had died down, Speed Racer information has been somewhat meager. There was a boring picture of John Goodman but that’s been about it. Filming must be going swimmingly and the May release date is fast approaching. Once the release date does arrive, though, don’t expect to see any real sets in the movie. Speed Racer himself says it’s all a big fake.
Star Emile Hirsch told Empire Online that the whole movie is going Sin City and shooting against a green screen. It’s all green screen. There were not sets, just us and the green background,” Hirsch said. He hasn’t even seen a finished scene. There was a lot of trust involved,” he added. Hirsch does point out that the monkey was very, very real. I’m not worried about a full green screen movie. The film will obviously have a tremendous look, but The Wachowski Brothers haven’t been able to put together a compelling, coherent story in quite awhile. Hopefully the script, characters, and events will be top notch and not just a vehicle to get to the next fake car crash or stunt.
