The other day I went off about Josh Flitter (License to Wed) and his poor career choices. Flitter should pay attention. Spencer Breslin has a better grasp on how to set up a more solid acting foundation.
Breslin is probably best known for his roles opposite Bruce Willis in The Kid and Tim Allen in The Santa Clause movies. Alright, The Santa Clause films may not have exactly been advanced acting (nor was The Cat in the Hat), but at least Breslin is trying and working with some talented people. His next two roles continue that tradition.
Breslin has been hired for the lead in Harold, starring with Cuba Gooding Jr. in a movie about a prematurely balding high school student. While Breslin’s losing hair and trying to fit in, he befriends the school janitor, played by Cuba. Breslin told The Hollywood Reporter the role fits him well because his friends call him a “neurotic old man” and the script made him laugh nonstop.
After Breslin finishes his hair loss program, he’ll step into M. night Shyamalan’s The Happening as part of Mark Wahlberg’s family. The movie focuses on the family on the run as a natural disaster threatens the Earth… or at least that’s what we’ve been told the movie is about – this is Shyamalan we’re talking about. Breslin notes he hasn’t bene told about any other aspects of his character other than he’s a bit of a smartass.
Obviously the Breslin family has a good taste for roles. Spencer’s younger sister is Little Miss Sunshine herself, Abigail Breslin. Between the two of them, we’re looking at a second coming of the Culkins, only with more talent. Perhaps Josh Flitter should look into adoption options.
