Spider-Man 4 is moving forward. There’s no news on cast or who’s directing, but Sony has chosen a scribe to write the screenplay for the fourth Spider-Man film. Of course, this is the second time that position has been hired. Previous writer David Koepp penned a script before his falling out with Sony.
Now Marvel and 20th Century Fox’s Wolverine writer, James Vanderbilt, has been brought on to write Spider-Man 4. Vanterbilt is probably better known for his screenplay to last year’s Zodiac, which helped earn him the Spidey job after Sony noticed the story was character-driven rather than focused on effects, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Even though a writer has been hired, don’t expect to hear story details anytime soon. The studio is holding the plot for the movie close, although word says they are determined not to repeat the overloaded story issues of Spider-Man 3. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the intent is to use only two villains. Here’s an idea: how about one? That worked pretty well in the first two movies, one of which is a near model of perfection for superhero flicks.
It sounds like the studio is holding a tighter leash on what is and isn’t being allowed than previous comments by Sam Raimi indicated. Last week it sounded like the writer brought on board would have carte blanche to do what they wanted if the story was right, even if it contradicted previous story plots. Now it sounds like the studio is running things, not the writer. I guess we’ll see when more details begin to leak out on the picture.
