It sometimes feels as though you can't go a full two weeks without hearing that J.J. Abrams, Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof have picked up some new project. As cool and creative those guys are, fans really just want to see one movie from them: Star Trek 2. While we've been hearing rumors and hints off and on for months now, it's hard to tell exactly where the project is at. Now we have a few hints.

At the same earnings call in which Viacom COO Tom Dooley raised our hopes about Zoolander 2, he also let it be known what is going on with the sci-fi sequel. According to THR, writers Kurtzman, Orci and Lindelof continue to put touches on their script and it is expected that it will be finalized in late December (that's a pretty nice Christmas/Hanukkah present). As for J.J. Abrams' involvement, he is currently attached as producer but is still not attached for the director's chair, despite Paramount wanting him to return.

The film has been scheduled for a June 29, 2012 release date since last January, so the timing still fits. Still, how refreshing is it to know that the script might actually be done at some point? Though it's only been a year-and-a-half since the first film hit theaters, it feels as though it's been much longer. Now if we could only finally hear who the villain will be we can finally strap in for the long haul that is the production stage.
