Star Trek Into Darkness Will Journey On To Blu-ray And DVD In September image
Star Trek Into Darkness piqued audiences’ interests early, thanks to a great marketing campaign, the power of sequels, and a load of secrecy surrounding which character Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch would be playing. J.J. Abrams’ second Star Trek movie and the twelfth in the franchise did well at the box office, grossing nearly $450,000 and paving the way for a third movie. Those who can’t wait for the new flick will at least be able to watch Star Trek into Darkness when it hits Blu-ray 3D, Blu-ray, DVD, and On Demand on September 10.

Unlike 2009’s Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness is more expansive, more convoluted, more destructive, and more fun. Some of these ideas actually fit the film really well, while others fall a little short of the franchise fans have come to know and love. The premise is simple: When a villain emerges in the unlikeliest of places, the starship Enterprise crew must step up and make some tough choices that may save Earth from a future war with the Klingons, but in the process, could also take lives. Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, and Damon Lindelof wrote the script for the movie, which features many of the members of the Star Trek cast, along with Alice Eve, who joins the Enterprise team as a member of the crew.

The Star Trek Into Darkness regular Blu-ray box art focuses on Kirk, Spock and the gang and can be viewed at the bottom of the page, but the truly exceptional cover art is the Blu-ray 3D cover, which focuses on the darker bent of the film and the injured ship barreling toward land and water in what looks to be a hopeless narrative. I like that the focus is on the action and not the actors, as much as I enjoy Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock.

If you are less infatuated with the Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D combo pack box art than I am, Paramount Home Media Distribution is offering fans an early Digital release beginning on August 20. Still, the Blu-ray extras were shot during filming for the release and look to be pretty expansive. DVD copies are where fans will really miss out, as buyers will need to purchase at least a Blu-ray copy to get the bonus features, of which there are many. Some of the extras look especially interesting, including one called “Brawl by the Bay,” in which Quinto and Cumberbatch discuss the high-octane action sequence which takes place in San Francisco. You can check out the full list of bonus features, below, or pre-order the set over at Amazon.
