Week two of the summer rush started off with another bang. In just one day J.J. Abrams’ franchise reboot Star Trek has banked more than most of previous Star Trek movies made in their entire opening weekends. Estimates for Friday’s sales put the sci-fi prequel at $24 million. When you roll in Thursday’s previews it tops the $30 million mark.
Clearly the special effects laden adrenaline rush of Star Trek is drawing in the audience, but all those fresh, nubile Starfleet twenty somethings didn’t have what was needed to top last weekend’s prequel X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
Last Friday fans shelled out $34 million to see how Wolverine got his start, a cool $10 million more than those interested in seeing Kirk’s first turn at the helm of the Enterprise. Star Trek is sure to go on to be a major summer cash contender but will likely end up with an opening weekend closer to the $65 million mark compared to the $85 million the mutant show banked last week.
Neither Wolverine nor Kirk topped last year’s summer superhero opener Iron Man. That film, which opened May 2, 2008, debuted at $102 million in its first weekend (including early Thursday screenings), a massive kick-off to what turned out to be one of the biggest cash summers on the books.
