Star Trek To Go Where Franchise Has Gone Before The producers of the new Star Trek movie have stopped thinking of going where no one has gone before. Instead they’re focusing on an area everyone has gone before: set course for sequel.

That’s right, even though we’re eleven months away from J.J. Abrams take on Star Trek (what do we call this now – a reboot? Reimagining? Revisioning?), the people behind the film are already thinking about what to do with a sequel. Bob Orci, executive producer on the picture, spilled the beans to Trekmovie.com: ”I can give you a spoiler about the Studio’s state of mind (not about the movie itself). The spoiler is that they already want to lock us down to write the sequel. Take that as you will.”

I suppose this story shouldn’t be much of a shock. After all, any successful movie instantly leads to a sequel these days, so it’s not too surprising to see filmmakers thinking ahead and plotting out the course of a series of movies instead of just one picture. Actualy, Orci acknowledges that too, stating that locking writers in for a sequel is pretty much standard operating procedure these days and isn’t a sign of Star Trek as the second coming or anything.

The website goes on to point out that primary cast members have been locked down for three movies in their contracts. Of course, we know Hollywood contracts are only worth the paper their printed on, with actors pushing for more money if a franchise is successful or the studio ignoring them if a franchise isn’t. Still, it is good to know Paramount is lining things up to follow the course of Transformers and Iron Man, juggling several franchise follow-ups at the same time, even if the original hasn’t been seen yet.
