It’s almost too easy to poke fun at Star Wars geeks. Their passion for the films beats their desire to sit at the cool table or avoid being written off as turbo-dweebs. They don’t give a hoot what you think about them, and on some level, that makes them rebels in their own way. And at the very least, it lands them lots of movie deals.
According to Hollywood Reporter, a movie called Fanboys is being released by the Weinstein Company, under Kevin Spacey’s Trigger Street production company. In final negotiations to play Star Wars geeks are Kristen Bell (“Veronica Mars”), Jay Baruchel (“Just Legal”), Chris Marquette (Just Friends), and Sam Huntington (Sleepover). Dan Fogler is already signed on to play a geeky hot-headed pizza boy.
The movie is written by Adam F. Goldberg and Ernest Cline, and Kyle Newman is making his directorial debut. The story follows four Star Wars fanboys from the Midwest who set out on a road trip to fulfill their dying friend’s final wish: to see The Phantom Menace in all its glory, on George Lucas’ Skywalker Ranch. Keep in mind this is before that film was released, and before anyone knew how dreadful it would be. Maybe their friend got lucky and croaked before they had to undergo that hazardous experience.
Shooting is scheduled to begin Feb. 22 in New Mexico.
