It’s like we always say: whether a movie is good or bad is irrelevant when compared to its opening weekend box office. The Step Up franchise is a perfect example. Step Up 2 the Streets was on par with direct to video movies as far as quality goes, but an almost thirty million dollar opening on President’s Day weekend has purchased the movie a third picture.
Since the second movie basically took the first flick and reversed the key roles, the third movie is desperately in need of some sort of gimmick to help sell it. What better a gimmick than the currently mega-popular trend of 3-D. Variety reports that Disney is moving forward with Step Up 3-D, allowing the movie to take a new ridiculously long dance sequence and put it right in the audience’s faces.
Unfortunately, first director Anne Fletcher appears to be staying away from the franchise she originated. Instead it appears Step Up 2 the Streets director Jon Chu is most likely returning for the third chapter. What a shame. Chu managed to take a guilty pleasure flick and churn out a listless sequel with nothing enjoyable to it at all, guilty or otherwise.
Even the dance sequences that made the first movie fun were lacking in Step Up 2, and I’m not sure adding 3-D effects could save those. I’d almost rather they digitally augment the first Step Up and just release that in 3-D. At least we know it’s entertaining, and I doubt there are many girls out there who wouldn’t want to see Channing Tatum popping off the screen at them.

Wow, did you even watch the first movie? It was horrible. I mean, beyond horrible. Horrible slow pacing, unbelievable caricatures of poorly sketched actors with zero motivation and worst of all, boring dancing.
I actually saw the second movie first, and eagerly tivo'd the first movie. Even for free, the first movie was just not worth it. Everything from the dancing to the plot to the dialog was just phoned in. I'm astonished anybody greenlit a sequel based on how horrible the first movie was.
Then John Chu came out of nowhere, managed to put together a soundtrack that's stuck with me like an earworm, and directed essentially an hour and a half long solid dance number. I'd watch the second movie again, no question. And if he's directing the third, I'll be there opening night.
Sure, the plot was lame and the acting ran between adequate and dumbfoundingly bad. But I thought the dance numbers were entirely compelling. I got dragged to the movie by my girlfriend and didn't expect to like it at all, but I had a great time. Despite the TWO women with crying babies in the row behind me. If the movie survived that, it's got to have something going for it.
i love step up but if they will turn it into 3d,we will only enjoy it on cinemas not on vcds nor dvds,i just wanna say that we still love step up even its not on 3d!!!
!!!!!!!
I LOVED STEP UP 2!!!!!
The dancing was absolutely amazing and it was really sweet. :)
How can you not have enjoyed Step Up 2??? I thought the acting was pretty good and...I loved loved love loved loved the dancing. Step Up 1 wasn't really my thing. I only watched it after I watched and fell in love with Step Up 2, but I suppose it was okay. I prefer Step Up 2, though.
The only thing I'm upset about Disney's new plan to make a Step Up 3-D is that I won't be able to watch it on my iPod or anything. I've watched Step Up 2 almost obsessively with my friends and it only being available at the cinema will be a bummer...but I suppose I can always go to the cinema multiple times. :)
Rafe, you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.
I thought Step Up was awful, and so I very reluctantly went to see Step Up 2 at the Cinema. I loved every second of it. If you're not into films like that you shouldn't be reviewing them.
A film like this is never going to be the best film ever made, but the music was brilliant, the dancing was amazing and it put a smile on my face for about a week afterwards.
I find it very difficult to comprehend that one found nothing interesting about Step Up 2. I find it near impossible to comprehend that one could think the dance sequences were dull, banal and colorless. I would then think that person was insane. The first movies pales in comparison to Step Up 2. You can't really compare them either. The first movie was set to be a drama with dance included in it. It wasnt set to be a groundbreaking dance film. Step Up 2...was. The dancers were highly skilled and brought elements to the screen that I had never seen in a dance film. It blew me away! Step Up I thought was fairly mediocre. I wouldnt see it again. I thought Mr. Chu did a great job reviving the franchise. And how can you go wrong with Robert Hoffman...he is one of the greatest dancers on the planet.
I was absoltely shocked when I just read this article!!! How in the WORLD can anyone say ANY of the dance scenes in the 1st Step Up movie was better than the dance scenes in Step Up 2 the Streets??? To date, I'm still playing the the dvd to the 2nd movie to see the cool dances scenes in it!! Channing Tatum is pretty hot (and I mean sizzling) but I much rather see Robert Hoffman's dancing (who isn't falling short in the looks dept. and the type of guy I would truly go for if I ever had the chance not the pretty boy type like Channing- but that's another story) I hope to see Robert and Moose in the 3rd movie!!
ya step up hataz man step up 1 and 2 was the bomb well the 2nd one was the best cuz it had more dancing , i look foward 2 step up 3-d even though it wont be the same wacthing it at home but watever i juss hope this movie has more street dancing then sum ballie shyt
Step Up 2 was way better than 1. The dancing in the first one was so boring. 2 had substance to the dancing. I would much rather have the second one recreated in 3D than the first.
Honsetly step up good channing tatum is gurjuzz omg but in step up 2 u could really see were they have cut and pasted like wen there in tha club dancing in the beginning she calls him todd and his name is tyler so yer laid
