It started in early February of this year, when Seth Rogen said that he’d like to get Stephen Chow to co-star with him as Kato in his Green Hornet film. We heard little more after that, but now it seems Rogen’s wish has come true… and more.
According to HR, Chow is now a lock for Green Hornet. He’s not just co-starring as Rogen’s sidekick Kato, he’s also directing the thing. Chow has spent plenty of time behind the director’s chair, helming movies like Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer, but this is his first American movie.
He may not have Hollywood experience, but Chow’s the perfect pick for what Rogen’s script is supposed to be. Stephen has a brilliant flair for visual style mixed with martial arts and comedy. That’s exactly what this particular version of Green Hornet is supposed to be.
The character of Kato was last played by the late, great Bruce Lee. Chow has big shoes to fill, but since this is a more comedic take on the Green Hornet world, comparisons are almost irrelevant. Chow seems to be a fan though, and he’s excited to do it. He says, “The idea of stepping into Bruce Lee's shoes as Kato is both humbling and thrilling, and to get the chance to direct the project as my American movie debut is simply a dream come true.”
