Steve Carell Will Be Big In The Phillippines In Of All The Things![]()
Dennis Lambert might not seem like the most obvious music industry figure to get his own biopic. He was a minor-league songwriter, penning hits like "We Built This City" and "Baby Come Back," and his one attempt at becoming a performer himself sank so badly in the States that he eventually became a Florida real estate agent. But Lambert's story has one weird, delightful wrinkle-- his single "Of All Things" became a gigantic hit in the Phillippines, enough that at 60 years old he was able to stage a national tour there and meet a country's worth of fans he didn't know he had.
The story was told in the documentary Of All the Things, which hit the festival circuit in 2008, but Warner Bros. has even bigger plans. Vulture reports that the studio is planning to buy the feature rights to the film as a star vehicle for Steve Carell. The movie would be a comedy, and would be a nice opportunity for Carell to twist his comic persona of the bumbling everyman who winds up in circumstances far bigger than he is. It also sounds like a genuinely heartwarming and great story. It's pretty hard to find the snark here. Below you can see an interview about the Of All the Things documentary done during 2008 Nashville Film Festival, which has more details about what the story is and gives a good idea of how much is there to explore. Carell's dance card is obviously packed with movie offers, but I'm really hoping he'll make the time to make this one happen. |
