Ben Stiller is becoming a Big Kahuna in the world of sports comedy. He was a hit as the mustachioed villain in Dodgeball, he’s producing the Will Ferrell/John Heder ice skating comedy Blades of Glory, and now he’s taking his competitive humor into the world of surfing.

Variety reports that Stiller is set to produce a movie called Big Wave through his obligatory celebrity production company Red Hour. The project is based on an idea by Ben, the story of a retired big-wave surfer who returns to the waves in order to save a convalescent home for old surfers. It’s plug and play movie making really. It’s the same idea used in making just about every sports movie. In Dodgeball they were competing to save their gym. In the upcoming Nacho Libre, Jack Black competes to save orphans. Wonderfully creative idea Ben. Thanks for using it again and again and again.

Big Wave is being directed by the brotherly directing team of Brendan and Emmet Malloy, two guys known mostly for making White Stripes videos. Yeah, those are pretty funny. It’s hilarious the way their videos have um… two different colors in them.

The script is being written by Brent Forrester, who has written for “The Simpsons” and “King of the Hill”, so at least there’s one guy on the project besides Ben who knows something about funny. Honestly, I’m not even sure about Ben anymore. His Meet the… movies are good for a chuckle, but is it because of him or in spite of him? It’s hard to tell.

No confirmation on who will play who in the film, though it’s probably not crazy to assume Ben will play the retired surfer. Right now he’s working on A Night at the Museum, but I’m sure he’ll be ready to ham it up again in another mediocre movie once that finishes.
