The eternally fabulous Meryl Streep is in another political thriller. Her last one was The Manchurian Candidate, a remake which turned out better than it had any right to be, in no small thanks to her. Her new one is New Line’s Rendition, a film being toplined by Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon and directed by Tsotsi’s Gavin Hood.
The Hollywood Reporter says the film is yet another Arab-world CIA movie, they seem to be the political message movie of choice for Hollywood right now. This one casts Jake Gyllenhaal as a CIA analyst working in Cairo who discovers a foreigner being interrogated by the Egyptian secret police. Reese Witherspoon will play the toturee’s wife and Streep will be a government official who orders the “rendition of the national”. I know, I have no idea what that means either.
