Unless you are living under a rock and said rock is on the moon and said moon is orbiting a planet in a different solar system then you know Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is out in theaters now. That means there are only two Potter movies left before Harry’s money stops buying new boats and airplanes for the executives at Warner Brothers. As much as the studio would like to release Harry Potter and the Painful Divorce Proceedings in 2024, it probably needs to get the creative juices flowing and come up with some new moneymakers.

In Hollywood, creative juices flowing means that they need to buy a property similar to Harry Potter and try to turn it into another successful franchise. Variety says that Warner Brothers has purchased the rights to the popular “Septimus Heap” series. Written by English author Angie Sage, the books are about, you guessed it, a boy wizard. There are currently three books out but, you guessed it, seven are planned in all. The first movie will be based on “Magyk,” the first book in the series, and will be produced by Sage and Karen Rosenfelt (The Devil Wears Prada.) No other creative people have been named.

Not wanting to be left out of the Potter coattails race, Relativity Media has acquired the movie rights to the fantasy book series “Tunnels.” The plot of the series deals with a 14 year old who goes down a tunnel after his father and finds a world of, you guessed it, wizards. This book series hasn’t actually even been released yet, the first book is scheduled for U.K. publication this year and it will be released in the States in January 2008.

It’s obviously a real crap shoot on adapting these book series. The success of the Potter franchise does not mean obvious success for the many imitators (hello Eragon!) Still, it appears that the metoplexes will be filled with wizards and spells for many years after Daniel Radcliffe takes off his glasses and spends his millions starting in 2009.
