MOVIE NEWS
Summer Shifts Several studios moved around their summer release dates yesterday, pitting new movies against each other at the box office.
Disney made the first movie, shifting their Lindsay Lohan vehicle Herbie: Fully Loaded from June 3rd to June 24th, which puts it up against Jim Carrey’s summer flick Fun with Dick and Jane. It also only gives Herbie a week to try and shine before being smashed by The Fantastic Four and War of the Worlds. It’s doubtful the little Love Bug is going to be able to hold up to one of those summer blockbusters, let alone both of them, no matter how bad their trailers look. In response, Sony skated their The Lords of Dogtown Heath Ledger pick to June 3rd (the skateboard movie was originally scheduled for a June 10th release), placing it against Herbie’s former competition, Russell Crowe’s Cinderella Man. Disney also offered up a new summer release, Sky High, a coming of age story scheduled for a July 27th release date. That pits the film against The Dukes of Hazzard and Stealth, both of which are also expected to do well with young audiences, making the theaters a place that I’ll be staying away from that weekend. None of these moves are absolutely devastating, and really the changes in competition are somewhat subtle at best except for Herbie, who is probably going to get smashed within a week of entering the 2005 Grand Derby... er, Box Office. |
