The Greatest was one of two movies at Sundance that had the entire festival talking about Carey Mulligan, a young British actress who seems poised to break out in a major way (the other was An Education, out later this year). Now the rest of us will get a chance to see what the buzz is all about; The Greatest has been picked up by Senator Entertainment for a North American release.
The movie stars Pierce Brosnan and Susan Sarandon as a pair of grieving parents, with Mulligan as the girlfriend of the son the parents lost. Per the press release, "as the Brewers adjust to their new “relative,” and the impending birth of a child who can never replace the one they lost, a drama of great warmth, depth, and surprising humor emerges."
Our Kelly West saw the movie at Sundance, and wrote that it "really does successfully capture the heartbreaking grief involved in the loss of a child as a family tries figure out how to move past it." If you have time to have a good cry when the credits roll, The Greatest sounds like an excellent all-around weepie. I'll be looking forward to it.
