Superman's Statue For Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice Explained image
Last week, based on reports that Metropolis was constructing a statue in honor of Superman, Mike wrote a great article wondering if the closing events of Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel warranted the erecting of a memorial to an alien force that caused the near-destruction of an entire (fictional) city. We didn’t know, at the time, why Supes was getting a statue in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Now, however, we sort of do.

We have to get into minor Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice spoilers moving forward. Stop reading now if you don’t want to know about the sequel.

According to reports on Batman-News, Superman (Henry Cavill) will receive this honorary statue in Zack Snyder’s movie for "saving the Earth" in Man of Steel. Reports from the location shots say that there was a press conference scene filmed, with camera crews from Gotham and Metropolis on hand to cover the unveiling of the statue. A mayor gives a speech. Kids wearing "Superman Survivors" shirts are in attendance. And they help pull back the curtain on a Superman statue that you can see on Twitter (and which will be finished, using CGI, in time for the film).

The site also says that a military scene was planned for a Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice shoot, but details on what happens in that scene aren’t available. The site does have pics of the Metropolis news helicopters (No Daily Planet signs in sight), and a Gotham news truck. This statue must be a pretty big deal.

As Mike noted in his own piece, however, honoring Superman for nearly destroying Metropolis seems strange. Remember these fight scenes? Brutal. Property damage. Lives lost. Collateral damage, people!

Oh, sorry. Wrong one. Here!

So, if the report on Batman-News is correct, all is cool between Superman and the citizens of Metropolis. They view him as a savior, someone who protected them from the bigger, badder threat of General Zod (Michael Shannon). That pokes little holes in the theory that both Batman (Ben Affleck) and Lex Luthor (Jesse Eisenberg) will sell the presence of Superman as a danger to our planet. Clearly, we’re OK with him. We don’t erect statues to villains! The rest will be explained when Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theaters in 2016. Or probably sooner.
