It’s starting to look like we may have finally have something concrete in the realm of Star Trek casting. Better still, it’s really good news. A few months ago we all heard the rumor that Zachary Quinto, who plays Sylar on ‘Heroes’ might be in the running to play Spock in JJ Abrams’ upcoming Star Trek prequel. With all the wild casting rumors circulating the project, no one really took it seriously, but maybe we should have.
E Online is reporting that Quinto is on the verge of completing negotiations and signing a contract to be Abrams’ young version of Spock. Basically, if what E! says is true, then the guy has the part and he will be the new Spock.
Zachary Quinto is a brilliant choice. The character of Sylar was one of the few good things ‘Heroes’ had going for it through its final couple, extremely limp, episodes of the season. And let’s face it, Sylar is only half a step away from a Vulcan anyway. Quinto can nail this role, and he looks the part too. Perfect casting for Spock, without a doubt.
He’s also about 30, so some have taken this as a sign that Matt Damon was wrong when he recently leaked the idea that Abrams was looking for someone about 20 to play Captain Kirk. However, that’s not necessarily so. Remember, Spock is considerably older than James T. Kirk. If Spock is 30, it wouldn’t be entirely out of the realm of possibility for Kirk to be about 20. It could also still work to have Kirk in his late-twenties, since Vulcans don’t necessarily look their age, but this is by no means squashes that awful, Damon generated, 90210 Captain Kirk rumor.
