Sympathy For A New Lady Vengeance?

By Rafe Telsch: 2008-03-12 21:39:42
Sympathy For A New Lady Vengeance? Director Chan-wook Park’s “vengeance trilogy” is something film buffs have taken notice of. His brutal thematic trilogy definitely shakes things up – so much so, in fact that Hollywood hasn’t quite figured out how to adapt his work into an American version. A remake of Oldboy has been rumored for a while now, but no real movement has happened on it for a while. Frankly, I think that’s a good thing – Park’s movies are perfect (albeit disturbing) without tinsel town manipulating the story to appease our cultural taboos.

Apparently Oldboy isn’t the only movie in the trilogy that’s been eyed for a remake. According to an interview with The Boston Globe, actress Charlize Theron announced plans to produce and star in a remake of the final film in the trilogy, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance. The original story tells the tale of a woman wrongfully imprisoned and her subsequent plot for (what else?) revenge.

It’s odd to see the news in the Boston paper, since this is the first most people are hearing about it. Even JoBlo, where I first found the story, admitted a bit of curiosity about a project nobody had reported on. Considering how slowly Oldboy has moved forward, which received a higher amount of attention from mainstream American audiences, something tells me a remake of Lady Vengeance may take a while, if it isn’t more than just a pipe dream.
