Take This Waltz Trailer: You Really Have To See This Divisive Romance For Yourself
Sarah Polley's Take This Waltz was easily among my favorite films at last fall's Toronto International Film Festival, the kind of movie that holds on to you so tightly you still want to live inside it once it's over. Polley's debut feature Away From Her won accolades for tenderly and incisively showing the destructive force of Alzheimer's on a relationship between an older married couple, but Take This Waltz goes in an entirely new direction, following thirtyish Margot (Michelle Williams) as she struggles with an attraction to her neighbor (Luke Kirby), despite being fairly happily married to Lou (Seth Rogen). In the new trailer for the film, which debuted at Yahoo!, you get a good sense of the movie's funny but quietly devastating tone-- and the standout performances from all the actors that help make it so special. Take a look below.
Yes, that really is Sarah Silverman playing Seth Rogen's sister in this dramatic, independent Canadian film, but I promise you won't even think that's surprising 10 minutes into the movie. As I wrote in my review from Toronto, it's career-best work from both Silverman and Rogen, another stunning performance from Williams, and a fantastic introduction to Kirby, who you can practically see smoldering throughout the film while also building his character as a real human being.
I'm head over heels for this movie, and have a hard time understanding the negative reaction that a fair number of critics had in Toronto. But come on, when something is that polarizing, aren't you pretty much commanded to see it for yourself? Take This Waltz will play at the Tribeca Film Festival this month, and it opens in limited release June 29.
