The new Terminator Salvation – The Future Begins has a script, although producer Moritz Borman hopes you won’t be seeing a script review anytime soon. Borman told Empire Magazine (as reported by The Sun) that the script is being kept under tight security to avoid giving away the huge twist at the end. ”Like with the last Terminator — we kept that under tight wraps so not even the crew got the last six or seven pages.”
The script is just a small part of Borman’s interview, where he discusses quite a few things fans of the franchise may want to know. For instance, who exactly is Christian Bale playing? The producer refused to comment on Bale as John Conner, stating, ”You can draw your own conclusions from that.” I thought Bale had already been confirmed as Conner, but apparently it’s not such a sure thing – he’s part of the movie, but the role still hasn’t been revealed. “Everyone is assuming there is a John Connor and a Terminator in the script. Connor is in there along with another figure, but who is that figure?”
Borman lays out the plan for the new trilogy, including where we pick up: ”I can tell you this much — this is the story everybody has been waiting for. Namely, we’re in the future. The part of it where Arnold’s character has not yet been built but is on the drawing board. And in the next two episodes we’ll get to the point where time-travel is more in the foreground. It’s the war against the machines, the start of Skynet taking over the world.”
So, does this mean no time travel? Well, the plot device didn’t “exist” in the first two movies, so we saw others from out of time entered into the movies. My concern is, does this mean time travel will become a bigger part of the plot in the second two films? Will we see a Bill and Ted mentality where time travel can fix all the obstacles the protagonists face? I sure hope not.
Since the movie takes place before the Arnold model of Terminator has been built, that clears the current governor of any filming expectations… at least for this picture. ”It’s convenient that he hasn’t been built at this point of the story, as Arnold has more important things to do right now, but that doesn’t mean he might not re-appear later in the trilogy. He knows the material and is very supportive of what we’re doing. There might even be hints of his character in this one.” I can only imagine Arnold reading a copy of the script in his office instead of the fire evacuation plan for Los Angeles. As far as a hint for his character, can we see a “T-800 For Governor” banner somewhere?
As far as other actors to play a Terminator, Borman addressed the rumor of Vin Diesel by stating the actor was not someone they were currently in talks with. Whether they were in talks at one time wasn’t indicated, but considering fan response, perhaps he should be someone they should be chatting with.
The absurdly long-titled Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins starts filming in April under the direction of McG.
