Yes, technically it's impossible to spoil a movie when it's based on a book that virtually the entire world has read. But when it comes to each of the Harry Potter movies, there are always plenty of questions about how the filmmakers will condense the long books, what elements will be tweaked or changed to work better on film, and in the case of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, at what point they'll split the single book into two movies.

All of that and more have been answered months in advance of the first film's release, thanks to a sneak screening in Chicago this week. A canny viewer submitted tons of details about what they saw to The Leaky Cauldron, and while they were careful to say that the effects aren't finished and the soundtrack is still being recorded, they learned a lot about what we'll see from the first Deathly Hallows installment this fall. Here are some of the highlights, along with my predictions and analysis of what it means:

MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD FOR BOTH THE BOOK AND THE MOVIE

  • The first movie will end when Voldemort steals the Elder Wand from Dumbledore's grave. The rest of the report mentions Hermione's torture at Malfoy Manor but doesn't mention Dobby's death after their escape to Shell Cottage; Voldemort retrieves the Elder Wand after Harry, Ron and Hermione make it to Shell Cottage in the book, so it's unclear if it will be moved up a little bit in the movie. My guess is the first movie will end on a dark note, with the trio captured at Malfoy Manor and then Voldemort stealing the wand. That means the second movie will kick off with the escape and Dobby's death. Bummer.

  • Many of the major opening events remain the same: We see the meeting between the Death Eaters that opens the book, the Dursleys leaving Privet Drive, everyone transforming into Harry clones (apparently they retain the same clothes and each actor's voice), the chase scene and Hedwig's death, and Bill and Fleur's wedding that's crashed by Death Eaters. We also see Hermione obliviate her parents before leaving.

  • The history of the Deathly Hallows is told in an animated sequence, while the Horcruxes are explained in a series of flashbacks and memories that feature Dumbledore and Slughorn. I still wonder how much they'll get into Dumbledore's relationship with Grindelwald, especially given Rowling's revelation that Dumbledore was gay.

  • The "sensual kiss" promised between Harry and Hermione when Ron is tormented by the horcrux is still there, and before that Voldemort emerges from the locket, turns into a tornado, and sends spiders running all over Ron's feet.

  • Xenophilius Lovegood doesn't sell the trio out to the Death Eaters, but summons them when he mentions the forbidden word "Voldemort." It's unclear if he does this on purpose though.

You can read the full set of details at Leaky Cauldron, and speculate away about what it all means in the comments. Since there are no more books left to come, this is sadly all the Harry Potter speculating we have left. Let's make it count.
