The Dark Knight Can Still Win Eight Oscars![]()
So everyone's disappointed about something this morning, whether you wanted a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Dev Patel or a costume design nod for Australia. But the loudest fan group of 2008 is also the most upset today, with The Dark Knight getting shut out of all major Oscar categories, except for a lone nod for Heath Ledger.
But here's the thing-- The Dark Knight is actually up for 8 Oscars, tied with Best Picture nominee Milk and not far behind frontrunner Slumdog Millionaire. So even if it couldn't jump over the superhero hurdle to get nominated for Best Picture, it's far from ignored by the Academy. Below is a list of the categories in which The Dark Knight was nominated, and its chances of winning. Chin up, Bat fans! Best Supporting Actor, Heath Ledger Ledger has been the frontrunner in his category forever, and the lack of overall support for his film should not hurt his chances of a win. This is probably the movie's safest win. Best Cinematography, Wally Pfister While his work in IMAX is groundbreaking, and the aerial photography really magnificent, Pfister seems likely to lose out to Slumdog Millionaire's Anthony Dod Mantle, or maybe even Roger Deakins for The Reader, a veteran who has never won the big prize. Art Direction, Nathan Crowley This category tends toward period pieces more so than action or fantasy (though Return of the King won it in 2004). Since the other four nominees here are period pieces, they seem more likely winners. Editing, Lee Smith Action movies do better here than in most other categories-- The Bourne Ultimatum won it last year. But then again, it's up against the very fluid and buoyant Slumdog Millionaire. Still, Lee Smith definitely has a chance here. Sound Mixing Another category in which action movies can do well. If they want a big summer movie and hated Wanted (how on earth did it get in there?) this will be a good choice. Sound Editing See above, although it's up against Iron Man here as well as Wanted. They might like the clanging armor sounds of the metal machines better than the Joker's haunting laugh, although I think we all know the better choices here. Visual Effects Very tough call, given that they're up against The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I'd give the edge to weird old man baby Brad Pitt though. Makeup I love that The Dark Knight made it in here pretty much solely on The Joker, and may even be able to win for it. Though Benjamin Button is a real threat, despite its heavy reliance on CGI for its "makeup" effects. So that makes one category The Dark Knight is pretty much guaranteed to win, and four more in which they have a really good shot. Five Oscars in one night? It's no $500 million dollars at the box office, but since The Dark Knight has that too, it can probably go home happy. |
