The Future Trailer: Miranda July Examines Relationships Through Magical Realism And A Talking Cat
I find myself saying this constantly as more and more trailers hit the Internet, but here's another trailer for one of my favorite films I saw at Sundance this year: Miranda July's The Future. Just the second film from the artist and actress who also made and starred in Me and You and Everyone We Know, it's a relationship drama shot through with comedy, magical realism, and narration from a talking cat that doesn't manage to be cloying. Well, at least not too cloying. The new trailer, which hit today at Apple.com, actually does a really good job of explaining the wild premise, so I'll let it take it from there.
The only thing I can tell you if this looks too cutesy and indie for you is that you should give it a shot anyway-- even when it's going off in wild directions or maybe indulging itself too much, The Future is full of a lot of painful truths and insight into long-term relationships, growing old, and all kinds of other stuff that movies don't usually bother dealing with. Coming to theaters on July 29, it'll make for an excellent midsummer alternative to all the bigger and easier-to-understand stuff. If you like a little bit of Sundance in your summer moviegoing diet, you know where to turn. |
