When we last left Zaphod Beeblebrox, Ford Prefect, Arthur Dent, Trillian, and Marvin the depressed robot, they were heading out in the Heart of Gold for a cool restaurant at the end of the universe. Fans of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy recognized the reference as a not-so-subtle nod to the second book in the series, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, and hoped that meant a sequel was in the works. Well, bad news: there are no plans for a Hitchhiker’s sequel.

That news comes straight from the human’s mouth. Arthur Dent himself, Martin Freeman, told MTV Movies Blog that he just recently had dinner with director Garth Jennings and was told flat out: no sequel.

I find this somewhat disappointing. Artistic license aside, I thought The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy was highly enjoyable and a lot of fun. Even the free-license can be tolerated, considering author Douglas Adams couldn’t keep his own story straight from format to format.

Freeman finds the news as a bit of a relief however. “It’s kind of cool with me because I just got out of being Tim from The Office. To go straight from that to being Arthur Dent for the next 12 years of my life wouldn’t have been too cool,” I can only surmise that’s because he hadn’t gotten to be caveman Arthur yet, with a big wooly beard and his green bathrobe.
