Given that we still haven't seen any official casting announcements, it was probably fair to assume that pre-production on The Hobbit wasn't going as smoothly as its planned March 2010 start date was confirmed. And now we know it-- The One Ring is reporting that filming has been delayed until next summer, gleaned from a quote Peter Jackson gave to a German newspaper (translated, of course):
“We’re currently working on the second script which we hope to have completed by the end of this year or beginning of next. When the scripts are completed, we can begin with the exact calculation of the necessary budget. We hope to start filming in the middle of next year. However, we’ve received no green light from the studio yet.”
That line about the lack of a studio greenlight is intriguing, given that they've had, I don't know forever to work this out. MGM is running out of money, as we all know, but The Hobbit is definitely the one gamble they're willing to take. My guess is that's just hedging from Jackson, and the real delay here is getting the writing done, then finally finding the perfect Bilbo. I'd say let them take their time and make it perfect, but these delays are getting ridiculous. We want Middle Earth, and we want it now!
