Tragedy has struck on the set of Peter Berg’s next movie, The Kingdom. The film sports a star-studded cast consisting of Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Chris Cooper, and Jason Bateman in the story of government agents sent to investigate the bombing of an American building in the Middle East.

The Hollywood Reporter says that while shooting in far east Phoenix, Arizona on the Loop 202 Freeway, 25-year-old assistant propmaster Nick Papac was fatally injured and killed. Shortly after shooting ended on Saturday, he was driving a small, all-terrain vehicle when he collided with a heavy duty SUV carrying around the film’s director Peter Berg. No one in Berg’s vehicle was seriously injured, but since Papac was on a small cart-like vehicle he sustained heavy injuries. He died shortly after being flown to a hospital to receive treatment for severe head injury.

Freak accidents happen, and The Kingdom will probably shut down production for at least a day or two while things are sorted out. In the real world, the death of a co-worker rarely affords such grieving luxuries, but this is Hollywood. Since Berg’s vehicle was involved it’s hard to believe that he’ll be unaffected by the incident, but with all the money tied up in a movie like this, they’ll obviously finish it. Look for a dedication in the film’s end credits. Sometimes real life and death comes crashing down on fantasy, whether we like it or not.

Oddly enough this comes just a week after rumors that actress Jennifer Garner passed out on set due to heat exhaustion. Things aren’t going well for The Kingdom.
