Even though Josh kinda sorta liked it, nearly every other critic has loathed The Last Airbender, and it looked like M. Night Shyamalan would be saddled with a flop even worse than The Happening. But you know what's a force even bigger than bad movies and negative reviews? Marketing. That's the only possible explanation for the news over at Deadline Hollywood, where they're reporting that The Last Airbender made $3 million from midnight screenings last night, and is on track to earn between $40 and $50 million for the 5-day weekend.

Not just that, but the movie is expected to make most of its money internationally, where maybe the dubbing will cover up some of the bad dialogue and acting. By some estimates the movie is costing the studio $280 million, so they're still going to need a lot more money to make up for the cost. But for a movie with a 6% Rotten Tomatoes score, even a couple million is pretty impressive.
