The Lonely Island's Akiva Schaffer Could Direct Ben Stiller In Neighborhood Watch![]()
The comedy script Neighborhood Watch has been making the rounds for several years now, with Wedding Crashers director David Dobkin at one point set to make it with Will Ferrell in the lead, and Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen hired last year to do some rewrite work on it. Now there's a sign of life in it yet again. THR reports that Ben Stiller is considering making Watch his next project, and that Hot Rod director Akiva Schaffer has an offer to direct it.
Crediting Schaffer only with Hot Rod does him some disservice though-- he's part of the Lonely Island trio that's behind the SNL Digital Shorts you've been e-mailing around for years now, from the Chronicles of Narnia rap "Lazy Sunday" to the most recent "The Golden Rule" with Justin Timberlake and Lady Gaga. Sure his only feature film was kind of a flop, but he's helped define the current era of SNL, and presumably has even more talent that we've yet to see. I'm not sure how the bizarre, slightly anarchic humor of The Lonely Island will translate to Neighborhood Watch, which would be a two-hander comedy starring Stiller and another actor, and is being produced by Stiller's safely mainstream Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy. But if it helps more people know who Schaffer is and gives him more opportunities to direct on a bigger scale, it has to work out somehow. |
