Since the Derrick Comedy group released their movie Mystery Team in 2009, one of the members has gone on to significant fame-- that'd be Donald Glover, breakout star of Community-- one of them has written a book-- that'd be D.C. Pierson-- but the group hasn't done any work as a collective. That's going to change at least a little bit thanks to The Hand Job, the indie comedy that has enlisted Pierson and Dominic Dierkes to join their Mystery Team co-star Glover (as announced yesterday) in the film. That's only three of the five Derrick members, but that's still pretty good.

The comedy, written and to be directed by Maggie Carey, stars Aubrey Plaza as a high school girl determined to lose her virginity before she goes to college. According to Variety the Derrick Comedy guys will be playing a trio of lifeguards, and with Bill Hader (also Carey's husband) on board to play a perpetually stoned pool manager, presumably there will be a lot of action happening at the local pool. Also newly joining the cast are Scott Porter, who will play a grunge rocker crush object, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, playing a nerdy friend. Mae Whitman and Alia Shawkat (whoo Arrested Development alumna!) play two of Plaza's friends, and Andy Samberg, Johnny Simmons and Connie Britton round out the remarkable cast.

When Carey held a staged reading of the script back in October, with Plaza already in the lead, it was unclear if the movie would ever receive financing or see the light of day. Happily that reading seems to have done exactly what they were hoping for, with money in place and a cast rapidly assembling. I don't even need to tell you how badly we need a good sex comedy about a girl-- even last fall's ebullient Easy A totally skirted the issue of a teenage girl being confident in her sexuality-- and if Carey is awesome enough to be married to Bill Hader, I trust she's awesome enough to write and direct a fantastic film. This is definitely one to keep an eye on.
