The Weekend Blend

By Josh Tyler: 2006-06-23 00:00:00
Cars is entering its third week of release, and probably has little chance to capture number one again. Instead, the biggest box office winner this weekend, almost by default, will be Adam Sandler in his new movie Click. Enjoy the ticket sales while you can Adam, with Superman Returns and Pirates of the Caribbean on the horizon, Click will be forgotten by Wednesday.

Here’s our usual look at what’s opening new in theaters this weekend:

6/23 – 6/25

Limited Releases(Opening in fewer than 500 theaters.)
It’s a big weekend for limited releases, with a wide variety of indie flicks vying for attention. None has screamed louder for my viewership than Wassup Rockers, a film which I’ve received daily, unwanted email updates on for months now… and I still have no idea what it’s about. Also in limited is Leonard Cohen I’m Your Man (1 theater), a documentary about well… Leonard Cohen. But if you’re going to skip the megaplex and head to an arthouse, the thing to see is the The Road to Guantanamo. Part drama, part documentary, the film follows a trio of British Muslims scooped up and thrown in a Guantanamo hole where they were held for two years without being charged. Eventually, the US Government figured out they hadn’t done anything, and let them go. They have their freedom, but how do they get those two years back?

Waist Deep (Opens in 1,004 theaters.)
Tyrese stars in a movie about a crook trying to go straight to spend more time with his kids, and then getting sucked into a world of violence and retribution in order to save his son from ghetto mobsters. The cast is dripping with rappers and the soundtrack is drenched in hip-hop, and the film is probably geared specifically for a certain kind of audience. That said, Tyrese is a genuine talent, one who simply hasn’t found the right script yet to show it off. He singlehandedly saved 2 Fast 2 Furious, maybe he can do the same with Waist Deep.

Click (Opens in 3,749 theaters.)
Adam Sandler stars in a movie born from an idea your six-year-old nephew could have come up with. Click tells the tale of a put-upon husband and dad gifted with a magic remote control, a device with the power to fast forward, pause, or rewind his entire universe. It’s getting mixed reviews, but it’s not getting terrible reviews so maybe there’s more to Click than meets the eye. Sandler, even at his worst, is usually dependable for a few laughs. Sure, you’ll probably have to sit through a few Rob Schneider cameos to get to them, but they’ll be there. You can count on it. In the absence of much competition, Click is the default movie to see this weekend.

STILL IN THEATERS AND WORTH YOUR TIME: Cars, Nacho Libre

  • Despite it's RT rating, I've actually read a lot of really positive reviews from some sources I often trust.

Though RT is usually a pretty good indicator, in the case of a Sandler movie I expect it to have a low RT rating just because it's a Sandler movie and because RT counts every review of every two bit critic with an axe to grind.

Not that it's good, plenty of bad reviews from trusted sources too. You gave it a pretty scathing 2 out of 5 for instance.

But I've seen enough REALLY positive reviews from others I trust that I'm calling it mixed. Just my personal opinion, but since it's my colum that's what you're all stuck with.
  • "Click" has 25% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Since when is that mixed? That is just flat out bad.

I was hoping this movie would be decent, but you can't always get what you want.
