Christmas is still a week away, but theaters are loading up on Christmas releases right now. This Friday three wide releases try to get the jump on the competition, while a whole slew of films try to build buzz and grab Oscars with a limited release this weekend; which they’ll expand into a wider release in time for the holiday season. The next two weeks are going to be busy.
Here's our usual look at what's opening and worth watching this Friday in theaters around the country:
12/15 - 12/17
Sneak Peak We Are Marshall starts its inevitable critical crash and burn this weekend by sneak screening in 1000 theaters across the country on 12/16. If you’re the kind of sucker that will watch anything that has football in it, or if you’ve ever attended Marshall University and don’t care how bad the movie because you’re so blinded by your school affiliation that you’ve deluded yourself into liking it, then check your local listings.
Limited Releases(Opening in fewer than 500 theaters.)
If you’re living in LA or New York, it’s a good weekend to go to the movies. In limited release is: Breaking and Entering with Jude Law. Bill Condon’s pseudo-musical pseudo-movie Dreamgirls. Steven Soderbergh’s post-World War II film noir The Good German. The Jessica Biel/Sam Jackson/50 Cent war teamup Home of the Brave. I thought he said he’d never work with rappers? Say it ain’t so Sam!
Charlotte’s Web
(Opens in 3,566 theaters.)
I was blown away by Gary Winnick’s adaptation of the classic E.B. White children’s novel Charlotte’s Web. It’s a beautiful movie which not only captures the story of the book, but the broader themes which have made it so important to generations of young kids. Charlotte's Web is lyrical, and soulful, and more meaningful than most of the made for mom and dad only movies you're likely to see this year. If you love the book; if you love life, then you'll love Charlotte's Web. This is some movie. It’s terrific.
The Pursuit of Happyness
(Opens in 2,852 theaters.)
The movie is getting mediocre reviews, but Will Smith and his real life son Jaden are getting awards nominations for their performances in The Pursuit of Happyness. It’s the story of Chris Gardner, a bright and talented, but marginally employed salesman. Struggling to make ends meet, Gardner finds himself and his five-year-old son evicted from their San Francisco apartment with nowhere to go. When Gardner lands an internship at a prestigious stock brokerage firm, he and his son endure many hardships, including living in shelters, in pursuit of his dream of a better life for the two of them.
Eragon
(Opens in 2,775 theaters.)
Cinema Blend’s Scott Gwin compares the dragon rider in Eragon to Darth Maul riding a Balrog. Judging from the kind of reviews the movie is getting, that may have been generous. By all accounts it’s the worst fantasy film since Dungeons and Dragons, so if you were hoping for a franchise full of Eragons forget it. We should have all seen this coming, after all Jeremy Irons is in it and though he’s great, he’s kind of like the fantasy franchise anti-christ. Fantasy and Jeremy just don’t mix. Based on the best-selling novel, this is an epic fantasy-adventure about a young farm boy named Eragon whose destiny is revealed with the help of a dragon. Eragon, now a Dragon Rider, is swept into a world of magic and power, discovering that he can save or destroy an Empire.
STILL IN THEATERS AND WORTH YOUR TIME:Happy Feet, Apocalypto, Casino Royale, Deja Vu, Borat, Stranger than Fiction
