The Weekend Blend Alfie

It’s another two release weekend at the movies, one in which the winner is clear. Yeah, Alfie is gonna get clobbered, and unfortunately there isn’t much we can do to save it. It’s up against another Brad Bird work of genius, and that’s the kiss of death. Hang on while I tell you how to spend your movie viewing weekend.

Alfie
This is a tough week for any movie buff. The problem you see is that Alfie is fantastic… assuming you aren’t too hung up on some weird loyalty to the original. But if you’re under 40, you really have no excuse for having that sort of hang-up. Unless you’re the sort of under 40 guy who is in to wearing leisure suits. Alfie is absolutely one of the best movies of the year. Jude Law is amazing as the suave philanderer, who since it’s the 2000’s has gone just a little bit metrosexual. But metrosexual gets chicks and Alfie nets quite a lot of them. The movie never panders to the audience and it isn’t the romantic comedy the trailers are intent on marketing for. It’s something a little harder, a little better. If you see two movies this weekend, make your second one Alfie. What a great week in which there is actually something a little better.

The Incredibles - CB PICK!
That something is the 1000 pound movie juggernaut Pixar and their latest offering, The Incredibles. In fact I just got back from seeing it, so excuse me if I’m on a little bit of a high. It’s absolutely fantastic… Pixar’s best film to date. Yes, even better than Toy Story. That’s pretty high praise, considering Pixar’s consistency. It’s emotional, funny, mature, all-embracing, a family film that you don’t really need a family to go sit down and enjoy. It’s PG because it’s also an action movie, one that despite being animated doesn’t shy away from death. The action is flat out crazy. I loved every single frame. It’s right up there with the best superhero movies ever made, live-action or otherwise. It may even be the best movie of the year. Yeah, I know you’ll have to wade through crowds of screaming kiddies, though if you have kids I suppose that’s a bonus. Hey, tonight I braved an event hosted by radio Disney. It’s worth plowing your way through all the spilled sodas and high pitch screaming. The Incredibles is a movie that you need to see opening weekend. That’ll leave you more time to see it again.
