The Weinstein Brothers Are About To Win Back Miramax![]()
THR says Bob and Harvey Weinstein are about to get back Miramax, the company they founded in 1979, ran, sold, and then left under the control of Disney not long after the turn of the century. While the Weinstein brothers were in charge, Miramax was not only successful, but it changed the movie business forever by turning independent film into a profitable business. Miramax under the Weinsteins brought us Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, and Kevin Smith. After they left, it all went to hell. The awards kept coming for movies like No Country for Old Men and Doubt but the money did not.
Out on their own the Weinstein brothers formed The Weinstein Company which has, for the most part, also been a failure. They’ve struggled to break even and except for a handful of movies like Inglourious Basterds failed to capture acclaim. Meanwhile Miramax has gone to pieces, turned into an unwanted pain in the neck for Disney, and finally things are so bad they’re getting rid of it. It makes sense that the Weinsteins want the good old days back, but buying Miramax doesn’t mean they’ll get it. It seems more likely that Miramax will simply turn into what The Weinstein Company has been, a struggling indie label that every once in awhile scores a big hit. The good old days of the 90s and Pulp Fiction are long gone. UPDATE! According to Disney this isn't a done deal yet. The bidding war is still on and the Weinsteins ownership isn't a sure thing. Why should you care which millionaire owns what? You probably shouldn't. Miramax is, after all, just a name. |
