The Winter Of Frankie Machine has been in high regard for quite awhile. People have been saying that it has the opportunity to be DeNiro’s Unforgiven, a work of self-conscious beauty that will wipe the taste of his post Ronin career right out of our mouths. And this is even before the book it is to be based on has been released. The last time this amount of hype has been around an unpublished book we got Sideways. Make of that what you will.
The film follows a retired mafia hitman who is pulled back for one last job at the behest of his old crew. It doesn’t take long to realize he’s being setup for his own execution. Variety says Ocean’s 13 scribes Brian Koppelman and David Levien will write the script, and DeNiro himself will produce. For a time Scorsese was rumored to direct until financing came through for his long awaited dream project (Number three now) The Silence. Hopefully ,since it’s only in the script stage, he’ll be done in time to join the production and create the perfect capstone for one of the most remarkable partnerships in cinema.
