Adding Jeff Goldblum to just about any movie makes that film instantly better, and so, logic dictates that Thor: Ragnarok is now marginally "better" than it was yesterday, when Jeff Goldblum wasn’t a key cast member of the third trip to Asgard.

As was confirmed today in a press release sent by Marvel, Jeff Goldblum has joined the cast of Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok, which will begin filming in Australia later this year. Goldblum, who’ll next be seen in the upcoming Independence Day: Resurgence, is set to play the eccentric Grandmaster in the film. He will join previously rumored (and now confirmed) cast members Cate Blanchett, Tessa Thompson, Mark Ruffalo and, naturally, Chris Hemsworth as Thor.

This news came as part of a massive casting update for Thor: Ragnarok, the third movie in the Thor franchise, as well as the third Marvel movie we will be getting in 2017. As part of the release, we learned that Blanchett will be playing Hela, the film’s main villain. The release confirmed that Creed star Tessa Thompson would be playing the classic warrior hero Valkyrie. And as part of the casting surge, Thor: Ragnarok was also adding Karl Urban (Star Trek, Dredd) as Skurge the Executioner, one of Asgard’s greatest warriors.

But who is The Grandmaster? The more you learn about him, the more you’ll realize that Jeff Goldblum is a beautiful and inspired choice to play him. One of the universe’s oldest beings – and, in fact, a member of the Elders of the Universe – The Grandmaster is highly intelligent, and once possessed The Mind Stone (an Infinity Stone that Thanos will be tracking down, as you know). The Grandmaster loves games, and often pits two opposing players against each other in high-stakes contests. He once even challenged Death. The Grandmaster feels like he could be a supporting player along the lines of Benicio del Toro’s The Collector (another Elder) – an oddity with his fingers on the pulse of the galaxy, and someone who’s playing a much larger game within the MCU. God, we can’t wait to see what Goldblum does with that type of role.

On the formation of this incredible cast, Marvel President and Thor: Ragnarok producer Kevin Feige stated:
The continuation of the epic Thor franchise will be powerful and unique, and with the additions of Cate, Jeff, Tessa, Karl, and Mark to the cast we have the makings of his most dangerous and heroic adventure yet. The sheer, raw talent each of these actors brings to the screen can’t be quantified. Having any one of them join the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be an honor, and having all of them is incredible.

We can’t argue. Thor: Ragnarok will be in theaters on November 3, 2017.
