The Surrogates is an upcoming action thriller that explores the potential of genetic cloning and making organs in test tubes, set in a futuristic world where every human has a robot “surrogate.” OK, so the robots aren't clones, but they look just like the humans but are eternally young and perfect. Apparently this helps people live risk-free lives, but exactly how is unclear.
Well, maybe Radha Mitchell, Ving Rhames and Rosamund Pike can help clear things up. The Hollywood Reporter says that all three have joined the cast of the movie, which already stars Bruce Willis as a cop who is using his surrogate to investigate the murder of other surrogates. Sounds a bit like Blade Runner, but with even more attractive surrogates/replicants. Not bad!
Rhames will play a cult leader who doesn't believe in surrogate culture and wants to start an uprising against the “new world order.” Mitchell will play Willis' fellow cop and partner, and Pike clearly drew the short straw and will be in the likely thankless role of “the wife” for Willis. You might remember Pike as the ethereally gorgeous older sister Jane in the Keira Knightley version of Pride & Prejudice, and won't be surprised to realize she's a solid 25 years younger than Willis. Wait, she's young and beautiful? Maybe she's a surrogate!
The movie is directed by Jonathan Mostow, who didn't exactly make a name for himself with the much-hated Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. But this movie actually sounds cool, if only because it sounds a whole lot like Blade Runner. Ving Rhames would make a badass cult leader, and Radha Mitchell has the potential to be a badass action star. And I'm sticking with my belief that Pike will turn out to be surrogate, which has potential for badass robot antics. And, of course, Bruce Willis was born to play an action hero. The Surrogates is set to come out in 2009.
