Jake Gyllenhaal and Doug Liman are doing what America is too inept to do – they’re colonizing the moon. No, not alone. Don’t worry they’ll be bringing along women. No, one of the women will not be named Heath Ledger.

They’re working on a movie project about a new space race, this time to colonize the moon through private expeditions. Out here in the real world, it’s become pretty clear national government’s can’t handle the pressure of a space race anymore. We’re all too busy worrying about who won American Idol to care much about oh, I don’t know, things like the future of the human race as a whole. Most people can’t see further than their front door. Maybe it’s because city lights block out the stars. Whatever the reason, big corporations like Google are the only ones showing any inclination to engage in that which once defined the spirit of man: exploration.

Liman’s untitled space movie is a fantasy version of that corporately funded push to rediscover the spirit of human innovation while making big bucks. Details on the project are as sparse, right now all Variety says is that Liman and Gyllenhaal are involved and that Limon co-wrote a script which is being rewritten by Black Hawk Dawn scribe Mark Bowden. Fly me too the moon Jake, but in a totally heterosexual way. Not that there’s anything wrong with the other way. Hey where’s the babes?
